Come for the nostalgia, stay for the challenge

I’ve nearly finished this single-player isometric-perspective RPG, which was born from a wildly successful Kickstarter. After a rocky start, I found myself digging this surprisingly grim (and PG-13) story of soul harvesting and dead gods. I like the characters in my party so much that I’m never tempted to swap them out for other classes. The quests are challenging enough to keep me engaged, but never googling the forums for help. The game runs smoothly on my recent-era iMac, with fans rarely spinning up. In keeping with the fixed-camera POV, a lot of the UI is deliberately old-school, with slots and textures and a lot of clicking. But Pillars has made some smart updates for the times, with an intelligent combat system, flexible (and retrainable) skills, and essentially unlimited inventory. If you play on the easier settings, you can avoid entire aspects of the game like food and potions. If you want more of a challenge, go for the higher difficulty settings and keep your flasks handy. In the end, I’d recommend Pillars to anyone looking for a classic D&D-style RPG.

Looks like some of the game is working

mk2: i changed my rating to 4 stars because i was able to play the first chapters so far with one of the characters i created. i do not know if it is only certain characters or sound sets or what that are causing fatal errors, but some of them do work and when they work they work well. the graphics are graet and the game so far is all i had hoped it would be. kinda like baulder’s gate but has a different tone to it. hope to get all the way through with no more problems then it will be 5 stars all the way…. mk 1: looks like it might be good if it did not crash after the opening scenes, before you can even give one command, before you even move…the character creation was the best part of the game so far. i really liked the opening cut scene showing the developers name and the name of the game. so i gave it 2 stars for that…maybe more if you fix the game so a guy can play it a little, i mean even an hour or two, not even to the end of the game and i would give you at least one more star. you can do it; i just know it, you have the talent to make this game work if you really put you mind to it. make it a 5 star game, really your have come so far to turn back now…and you have my $34.00 to help pay for it too.

This is the game I

Dont listen to the haters. Been playing this for a year and its still awesome. This is a lovingly crafted, astonishingly deep game that both pays homage to the RPGs of olde and leverages its independence to bravely shatter old boundaries. The realism is incredible, even as the level of fantasy gets turned up to 11. You wont find any of the cartoony crap thats all the rage right now across the App Store. Instead youll find deep, overlapping magic and combat systems, and compelling characters with well-crafted dialogue and real-world attributes that you almost never see in the genre, like crude language, recreational drug use, racism, religious fanaticism and sexuality. Its not perfect: the stronghold is conspicuoulsy unpopulated even when developed and frustrating to navigate because of all the load screens, certain features like taking prisoners are barely developed, the expansion packs come slower on the App Store despite its great success here, and the in-app purchase screen is primitive and hard to use. And none of that matters. A few hiccups are inevitable for a game with such daring breadth and scope. And the best part is, it shows every promise of expanding and improving for many long years to come. Off to a great start with Game of the Year, and things have definitely improved even more with the expansions. The first one is good and the second one rocks. Bravo Obsidian. Cant wait to see where you take us next.
